The morning sun rises and its rays hit the Olympic Mountains in Olympic National Park on the north end of Washington State's Olympic Peninsula. These mountains come down to meet the sea in Port Angeles, where I live. They are absolutely stunning, and one of my favorite subjects. Painting these rugged peaks in watercolor with the fast changing moods is always a challenge. The results are special. In this painting the ocean washes up to the shoreline. Some fall colors can be seen amongst the evergreens that line the shores. Warm peachy pinks
glow behind the mountains and blue gray morning clouds are tinged with the sunrise colors. These colors are reflected in the quiet gray waters of the ocean. Painted in my usual interpretive realism style, it is a peaceful morning and perhaps a good place for meditation. As are most of my watercolors, it is painted on Arches 300# paper, one of the best on the market. It is heavy, strong and durable. This particular painting is on cold press, which means it has a light texture.
